Veteran infielder Adeiny Hechavarria signs Minor League contract with New York Mets
Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and the New York Mets agreed on a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The deal was expected to be completed Monday once Hechavarria passed a physical.
Hechavarria, who turns 30 in April, is coveted more for his defense than his bat. Amed Rosario is slated to be the starting shortstop.
Hechavarria batted .247 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 94 games for three teams last season -- the Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.
Overall, he has a .254 average with 28 homers and 238 RBIs in 811 games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2012), Miami Marlins (2013-17), Rays, Pirates and Yankees.
